I was part of a panel discussion on Hollywood and its influence on Indonesian cinema yesterday at @america, the US cultural center in Jakarta. I was talking with three very smart people: Kimo Stamboel, one of the directors of Rumah Darah, Noorca Massardi, a jounralist and spokesman for Cinema21, and film programmer Ray Nayoan.
I prepared this map of cinemas in Indonesia, duplicating a map in Delta Film magazine. It’s remarkable. No movie theaters in Aceh, Papua, Sulawesi and Maluku. None. Zero. And it’s not much better save for the provinces near Jakarta, which has 48 cinemas.
We talk about reviving cinema culture in Indonesia. But what happens when there are no cinemas?
